Er ist der Größte, der Beste, der Eleganteste, der Feinste, der Innovativste, der Schönste von allen: Der großartige Zeichner Jean Giraud alias Moebius, das Genie, ist Samstag im Alter von 73 Jahren gestorben. Sein Rang und seine Qualität sind gar nicht hoch genug einzuschätzen, anderen Granden wie Daumier, Goya, Lautrec, Janssen oder Busch steht er in nichts nach.

Das Programm dieses Jahr umfasst Art Spiegelman, Fred den Goßen und hier leider so unbekannten, Web-Comics, BANDE DESSINÉE ESPAGNOLE und vieles mehr. Auch viele deutsche Zeichner und Autoren werden vor Ort sein. Ist in jedem Fall eine Reise wert. Das neue Jahr steht vor der Tür und mit ihm ein neuer Schwung an deutschen Mangazeichner-Hoffnungen. Während die hiesige Landschaft an Eigenproduktionen mit großer Vielfalt glänzen konnte – dank junger Talente wie Melanie Schober, Anike Hage und Nheira, die von den großen Verlagen aufgebaut und gefördert wurden – konnte man dies von der Genreauswahl nicht behaupten.Von vielen wurde der deutsche Shonen Manga für tot erklärt: Shonen gelten als Jungs-Manga und thematisieren oft die actionreichen Geschichten junger Helden, die für ihre Ziele kämpfen müssen.
Ein Vertreter dieses Genres ist Nightmare Hunter Nemo, das kürzlich vom Tokyopop Verlag angekündigt wurde und für Rummel in der Szene sorgte, glaubten doch nur noch wenige an den deutschen Shonen-Manga. Gezeichnet von Martin Geier, der mit seinen jungen 21 Jahren bereits die Qualitätsmesslatte deutlich auf japanisches Niveau anhebt, darf man auf sein Erstlingswerk gespannt sein. Ich bin es auf jeden Fall!

Comic artist and author Joe Simon has died on Dec 14th 2011 at the age of 98. Together with Jack Kirby he was one of the most important creators in the golden age of comics. They invented lots of characters, the spangled hero being the most important. He was the ultimate opponent against Germanys dictator and the ultimative national symbol. If you compare their original costume design with later concepts you can see how strong Joes and Jacks idea was: none of the later reached their impact. Simon was even more succesful with a famous series called Young Romance. These and lot of other facts are written in an interesting article at the Guardian.

This book is THE ULTIMATIVE POP ART BOOK! And: I LOVE IT! In 1975 Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, Michael William Kaluta and Bernie Wrightson formed The Studio, the blueprint for all illustrators menagerie ateliers from then on, in the middle of Manhattan, center of the volcano called comic & pulp industry. Though young they were not only among the best-known, top-ranked and innovative narrative artists. They also formed the avantgarde of their species crafting a hippiesk neosymbolistic premangamäßig illustration style. No one ever after reached this level and this book compiles their masterpieces, what a joy! 
To admit: I always geared to get this book, published in England in 1979 by Dragon’s Dream and long-time not available. And now it is there, thank amazon! Never ever let it go. Order of the day: >BUY!

Alexandro Jodorowsky ist ein echter Spinner, so einen braucht man, um gute Geschichten zu erzählen. Und von ihm sind einige der besten entwickelt, die je publiziert wurden, als Buch, Film, Spiel, App, was auch immer. Mit der Geschichte um die Kaste der Méta-Barone fabuliert er an einer der interessantesten Figuren aus seinem und Moebius´ Epos L`Incal.
Jetzt ist die komplette Saga als Intégrale erschienen, heißt: alle acht Alben in einem Band, auch wegen des schönen Letterings optisch ein Genuss. In deutsch gibt´s erst die Einzelbände, empfehle ich als Weihnachtspräsent. Ein Wort zum Zeichner Juan Giménez (nicht verwechseln mit Carlos G*): “Toll!” Und: “Großer Meister!” (Das waren drei) >via

Barry Windsor Smith is probably the most famous artist of “The Studio”-group. His work is most famous for drawing Conan, imagine this character being an elegant and naive figure, much more Perceval than Schwarzenegger, absolutely not the Conan clichee but immensly important for comic art development.

Jeff Jones: Life could be an Idyll

Jeff Jones is one of the most interesting illustrators whose work I have ever seen. Born as Jeffrey Durwood Jones he/she died as Jeffrey Catherine early in 2011, passed away, what a great loss! Jeff Jones was a member of “The Studio”. I do not know any other artist being just as soft, easy, swift and genial in handing a brush illustration.

To honor Jeff Jones please view and buy his work. His masterpiece “Idyll” is hard to get.
